Shepherd's Bush Bomber Caught 220 Bus

CCTV released of wanted man's journey following attack

Police investigating the failed London bombings have released a new CCTV image (see picture right) of one of the men they wish to question. The man, who is believed to be the Shepherd's Bush bomber, is seen on board the number 220 bus as it travelled from Wood Lane, west London, towards Wandsworth, south London, last Thursday. He has not yet been identified by detectives.

This route travels south towards Hammersmith Broadway then past Charing Cross Hospital to Putney Church and then on to the Arndale Centre in Wandsworth. He is believed to have boarded the bus at around 1.20pm and stayed on the bus until it terminated in Wandsworth near the Arndale Centre where he alighted at around 2.07pm.

The police have also disclosed that the dark blue shirt he was wearing was an England football top. This is believed to have been discarded in the area around Macfarlane Road, W12 but has not been recovered. It is likely to have been quite stained and muddy.

Scotland Yard urge anyone who may know where any of the suspects were to call 999, or if they could identify any of the men to call the anti-terrorist hotline on 0800 789 321.

The picture below was taken at Westbourne Park Tube shows the man at 12.21pm on the afternoon of the attack.

Police believe he travelled westbound on the Hammersmith and City line to Shepherd's Bush underground where he attempted to detonate a bomb at 12.25pm and then ran from the station.

He was wearing a dark shirt and trousers and was later reported to be wearing a white vest.

The Shepherd's Bush suspect is believed to have escaped from the train through an emergency exit and then scaled a fence to get into Macfarlane Road which runs parallel to the tracks. He ran through several back gardens before finding a door that was opened and went through a house and then onto Wood Lane. There he proceeded north towards the BBC centre. At this point he is believed to have discarded his jacket and was wearing a white vest. He was then seen walking northwards under the A40. It now appears that the man caught the 220 bus travelling towards Wandsworth.

He seems initially to have been walking in the direction of Little Wormwood Scrubs where a fifth rucksack was discovered. There is speculation that there may have been a fifth bomber who decided to abort his mission and dump his bomb in the park. Initial forensic examination reveals clear similarities between the four bombs used and this discovery.

Sir Ian Blair the Metropolitan Police Commissioner has appealed for witnesses with mobile phone pictures of any of the incidents to send them to www.police.uk.
