Tube train derails at Hammersmith

Rusted track blamed - no reported injuries

The derailment occured on Friday night on the east bound track 100 yards out side Barons Court station. There were 76 people on the train but they were all guided to safety by the Fire Brigade and LUL staff.

The wheels of the rear carriage appear to have come off the track but all carriages appear to have remained upright

TfL said it would take charge of an investigation into the latest incident. An inspection the night before did not report any problems with that rail, although other issues were noted, said TfL.

The track on which the incident is maintained by Metronet, which has the contract for the District line which uses the same route, but Piccadilly line trains are maintained Tube Lines Group, and the service was operated by TfL.

Overnight, engineers worked to replace the broken rail and it has been removed for further tests. The Piccadilly line train was also removed overnight to a depot for tests.

A London Underground spokesman: "As far as we understand at this time only the last wheels on the last carriage came off. We don't know the cause of the derailment. There will be a full investigation."

Less than 36 hours after the Hammersmith incident up to seven people have been injured in a another Tube train derailment at Camden Town on the Northern Line in north London.
