Assembly Member Welcomes Card Payments For Taxis

Transport for London’s announced taxis will have to accept card & contactless payments

The GLA Transport Committee has welcomed the news for 2016. Making the acceptance of card payments more attractive to cabbies was one of the important recommendations made in the ‘Future Proof’ report into the taxi and private hire industries - and it is clearly common sense.

Passengers will no longer have to worry about carrying cash and it is very positive news for drivers. Evidence from New York during the investigation, said the introduction of card payments boosted business - so this gives licensed taxi drivers a golden opportunity, in a hugely competitive market.

The elimination of customer surcharges for card payments and the reduction in transaction fees paid by drivers should all add up to a better, more efficient service for customers.

Commenting, Richard Tracey, London Assembly Member for Merton and Wandsworth said:
"It is excellent news that from next year it will be compulsory for London's black cabs to accept credit card payments. I know of many people who avoid cabs because, even though many do accept credit cards, there is no guarantee that they will. This change will give Londoners confidence that as long as they carry a credit or debit card they'll be able to get home using a black cab."
