Borough’s young athletes go for gold

Brentford Fountain Leisure hosts primary school sports day

More than 500 young athletes from almost 50 primary schools across the borough will be competing in the third annual Hounslow School Sports Association Primary Sports Day on Wednesday 8th November.

The event takes place at Brentford Fountain Leisure Centre and the pupils will be joined by Britain’s most capped international athlete Judy Oakes OBE.

Cllr Dr Robert Kinghorn, Executive Member for Children and Lifelong Learning at Hounslow Council said, “A love of sport can last a lifetime and by encouraging children to take part at an early age I hope it becomes a regular part of their lives, helping keep them healthy and active for years to come.”

Pete Lammas, PE adviser for Hounslow Council, who has organised the event, said, “With the 2012 Olympics around the corner, it’s a great time to get children interested in sport and competing against their peers. As if they needed any further encouragement, Judy Oakes OBE will be here to show them what can be achieved with commitment and dedication. The event gets bigger every year and the children really love taking part. It’s a great platform for our sporting stars, and offers all the competitors the chance to compete with other children from across the borough.”

A total of 49 primary schools will bring teams to the competition and will be supervised by 150 staff and helpers.

During the lunch interval, the children will watch a presentation about the 2012 Olympics and hear from Judy Oakes OBE about how she became such a successful athlete.

All pupils that take part will be rewarded with a goody bag at the end of the event.
