Another week of exam results brought even more success to Hounslow's schools as more than 2,500 students across the borough were given their GCSE grades last week.

A record breaking 64.1% of students received five of more A* to C grades in their GCSE's, compared to 58.0 per cent last year.

Congratulating them on their success Cllr Dr Robert Kinghorn, Executive Member for Education and Children, said "It's another proud day for Hounslow's young people and schools and I want to congratulate them on their wonderful achievements.

"Results like this don't just happen by themselves, so it's important we look beyond the grades and percentages and recognise the hard work put in by students, teachers and support staff alike.

"Among the many successes, there will be a small number of students who will leave full time education with nothing to show for it. These should not be forgotten, and I'd like them to remember that the door to education and training is not closed to them. Hounslow Connexions provide an excellent service for all young people - whatever their situation - to get the information and advice they need to make the right choices to get on in life, and I would urge anyone who is unsure about what to do next to contact them."

Dr Bob Garnett, Director of Lifelong Learning, said "These results are quite simply a phenomenal achievement for a borough like ours and I am delighted that our young people and schools have, once again, shown us all how good they really are. I am delighted to add my congratulations to all our young people and all those who work with them. I am so pleased and proud for them and for all who have contributed to this success. It has never been clearer that you do not need to look further than your local school to give your child an excellent education, and provide them with the best possible start in life."

Local MP Ann Keen joined the congratulations of pupils and teachers on this year’s GCSE and Key Stage 1 and 2 results. She said “Student’s, families and teachers must be especially proud today and the rising figures ensure that every young person gets the best possible start in life. Hounslow’s schools have shown figures significantly above the national average.

“These GCSE results are evidence of the continuing standards in our schools. I congratulate pupils and teachers for their hard work and commitment – they should be proud of their achievements. “

Personal advisers from Hounslow Connexions are holding special drop-in sessions for students to help them make the right decisions. Students can call in on weekdays until the start of term, at: The Attic in Hounslow Library (10am – 5.30pm) or Chiswick Community School in the sixth form block (10am-4pm).

The Attic will also have advisers available on Saturdays from 10 am and a helpline has been set up on 020 8577 5478 for students trying to decide what to do next.
