Hounslow Council extending SEN provision includes Strand on the Green
A Chiswick primary school has been approved for twenty-one places for children with special educational needs.
Strand-on-the Green Infant and Junior Schools will start a consultation on a special autistic unit following approval from Hounslow Council. It will the first unit of this kind in a Chiswick school.
A special meeting will be held for parents at the school on Monday, which will be attended by representatives of Hounslow Council to give information on the proposal.
It is understood that the unit would be built on the site of the school and the children would be part of the school community but would attend the unit for specialist matters. The unit is expected to cater for high-functioning children on the autistic spectrum but who would be fully integrated into classes.
Heston Heath Junior, and Feltham Hill Infant and Nursery School are also approved for increased special needs provision by the Council and part of the consultation.
A Hounslow Council spokesman said:
We are currently consulting on plans to expand SEN provision across the borough, which includes proposals for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 provision for primary aged pupils with ASD at Strand-on-the-Green Infant and Strand-on-the-Green Junior Schools which will have capacity for 9 Key Stage 1 ASD places and 12 Key Stage 2 ASD places.
Hounslow, in common with other boroughs across London is experiencing an increase in the number of children with special educational needs (SEN).
The Council has statutory duty to provide education for these children that can provide the specialist support and teaching
Hounslow's population is growing and more pupils are entering school with SEN and disability. Special schools in the borough are full and surrounding boroughs report similar pressure on their own special schools.
The proposals on which we are consulting are designed to increase the number of SEN centre places to enable as many of our pupils with statements as possible to be educated in the borough, in the most suitable provision.
People can submit their views via the questionnaire which can either be emailed or by printing off and returning it to the council by 18 October.
