Local Students meet Gordon Brown

Ann Keen MP organises visit to No. 11 Downing Street

A privileged group of sixth form students from schools across the borough were given a tour of 11 Downing Street, the Chancellor of the Exchequers official residence this morning. The outing was organised by Ann Keen Member of Parliament for Brentford and Isleworth who is also Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Chancellor.

Ann Keen said It was a great opportunity to invite young people to Downing Street to see the offices where so many of the decisions that affect their lives are taken. I was honoured to introduce them to the Chancellor Brown who spoke to them about international development.

In particular the Chancellor discussed the steps the government is taking to tackle the problem of the debts facing developing countries and the responsibility our government has to these countries. Later Ann reflected on the boroughs responsibilities and the students role in addressing the problems introduced by the chancellor, while touring the main meeting room.

Students and staff from Brentford School for Girls, Isleworth and Syon School for Boys, The Green School for Girls, Hounslow Manor School and Lampton School attended along with Councillor Ellar London Borough of Hounslows Executive Member responsible for education.
