Council leader praises staff response to storms

Emergency teams reduce impact of bad weather

The storms which shook the local area yesterday required a prompt and decisive response from various departments of the local Council and their efforts have attracted praise from the leader of the Council.

Gail force gusts brought trees down and shook roofs from buildings. Council officers from a number of departments were called out to check buildings, make repairs and help make areas safe for the public.

Cllr Peter Thompson, leader of the London borough of Hounslow, said: “I would like to convey my personal thanks to officers who were involved in yesterday’s emergency response. It was rapid, well organised and highly professional amidst trying circumstances.”

Problems still remain in the aftermath of the disruption. Church Road in Osterley is closed between Thornbury Road and Osterley Road, as a result of damage to some properties. There is no access from Osterley Road to Church Road, but there is some pedestrian access from Thornbury Road. Some schools within the borough remain closed.

The Council’s building control section made approximately 13 visits to sites across the borough to deal with incidents, including roof damage, collapsed walls, fallen hoarding, trees on houses, loose cladding and roof slates, and unsafe hoardings.

The Council’s street management and public protection department were out and about making signage safe and secure following reports of signs, hoardings and name plates falling over. The emergency planning team remain on alert responding to on going issues.
