Panel praises 'huge improvement' in borough's transport

The Council’s efforts to encourage greater use of buses in the borough have been acknowledged at the London Transport Awards.

Hounslow secured an award in recognition of the new bus priority schemes that have been installed at several locations over the past eighteen months.

These schemes include:

• The Chiswick High Road Exemplar scheme between Chiswick roundabout and Acton Lane, involving extended bus lanes, new traffic and parking arrangements and new pedestrian facilities.
• A new scheme on Staines Road between Martindale Road and Wivenhoe Court, featuring a city-bound bus lane, improved bus stops, parking and loading bays and local road widening.
• Smaller schemes on London Road at Isleworth station, Grove Road in Hounslow town centre and Bath Road at Hounslow West Station, each combining bus priority and pedestrian safety and improvements.

In presenting the award, the judging panel said “Hounslow has really made a huge improvement to the borough’s transport. Bus services have been reviewed, and bus friendly traffic management schemes and bus priority have been introduced. Work is ongoing with a range of partners to secure better access to services.”

Hounslow’s head of transport, Chris Calvi-Freeman, said he was delighted that the efforts of a very small team of designers, engineers and consultants had been acknowledged, and added that further schemes were in the pipeline at other locations, including work at Stamford Brook.
