60 new bins have been installed in Chiswick to tackle the local litter problem. The move is part of Hounslow Council’s commitment to improve the street scene as part of its on-going ‘A Stupid Waste’ campaign.

As part of the Council’s bin replacement scheme, another 50 bins are due to be put in across the borough over summer.

In total, some 250 bins have been installed in new locations across the borough in a bid to encourage residents, workers and visitors not to drop litter on the pavements, but to dispose of rubbish sensibly.

Hounslow’s Community Environment Manager Rebecca Behrendt, said: “We have replaced old bins and put some in new positions where litter is a problem - outside shops and near bus-stops along Chiswick High Road, and along pedestrian routes around stations.”

The ‘A Stupid Waste’ campaign aims to challenge people’s attitudes towards rubbish, and encourage them to take greater responsibility for their local environment.

The cost to taxpayers to clean up the litter that they drop is approximately £2.7 million every year. There are 1300 litterbins across Hounslow, predominantly based in and around town centres and local shops.

Refuse is collected from 92,000 domestic properties and 2259 commercial premises. When bags are left on the pavements outside collection times it can attract vermin, which tear the bags, strewing litter on the public highway.
