A New Year Message from Mary Macleod

Local MP reflects on 2012 and looks forward to 2013

Dear Resident,

2012 was a magnificent year for the whole of the UK with the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Local residents played a major part in these events, as athletes, torchbearers, supporters and Games Makers. We need to continue this Olympic spirit into 2013. More people than ever before are taking part in sport but the Olympic legacy is about more than just sport – it's about boosting business, increasing volunteering and building communities.

I have been incredibly proud of the achievements of local residents this year, including record exam results at many schools and the creation of five local Academies. Almost 600 new businesses were registered in my constituency this year and the number of young people claiming Job Seekers' Allowance has reduced by 27% over the last year. I would like to pay special tribute to all those this year who give up their time to look after others – their efforts are part of what makes Britain truly 'Great'.

As we start a new year, I look forward to working with you, to continue making our local community even better. I wish you all a very happy and healthy 2013!

Best wishes,
Mary
