Protestors call for peace in Lebanon

Local groups join thousands who marched for an end to the war

Members of the West London branch of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign and Hounslow Stop the War Coalition were among the estimated 100,000 demonstrators who marched from Hyde Park via the US embassy to Parliament Sq. last Saturday demanding an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East.

On the way past Downing Street, marchers placed children's shoes at the Cenotaph to draw attention to the huge number of children killed in Lebanon and Palestine. Lebanese and British children carried four coffins and also placed them at the Cenotaph.

Cllr Andrew Dakers, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for Brentford & Isleworth, was also amongst the protestors who took to the streets.  He said, “Many people from Hounslow, touched by the plight of the families caught in the middle of this tragic conflict, joined the march to show their support for an urgent peace settlement. The UN resolution agreed between France and the US is a step towards securing a sustainable peace in the area. However on its own this is not enough.

“For their part, the governments in the Middle East, including Syria and Iran, must press for a Hezbollah ceasefire and the return of the Israeli soldiers. Israel will also need to commit to withdrawing from Lebanon to allow an international stabilisation force to patrol a buffer zone.”

West London Palestinian Solidarity Campaign have worked through meetings and their monthly stall on Chiswick High Road to call for an end to Israel's present actions in Gaza and the West Bank and for a resumption of multilateral talks.
