Local Young Women Writers Launch Monuments

A publication by Hounslow Acton for Youth's group

The group supports young women writers in the area

Hounslow Action for Youth’s (HAY) Young Women’s Writing Group launched its anthology, Monuments, this week, at an online event, supported by musician Saachi Sen and award-winning poet Rakaya.

Five of the young women authors read their own work, focusing on the issues young women face locally. Monuments is a product of the charity’s young women’s writing project.

Bijal Karavadra, Project Manager and Senior Youth Worker, says, “The writing project was co-developed by HAY with a group of young women from local schools and has been ongoing for three years. However, the young women who engaged with the project this year have brought their own vision to the project, illustrating the book with their photography and illustrations, structuring the book conceptually.

"Through their writing, the young women have explored themes of political activism, art, spirituality, and the pandemic, suggesting new ways of being in this constantly changing world. They have put themselves on the front line for their art. Getting onto the platform of large literary events across London to read their work and promote the project to other young people.”

Debbie Hughes, CEO at HAY explains, “We have sustained this work because it is co-developed by young people and it is integral to platforming young women’s voices and helping them to engage in civic activities, building the cultural landscape of their communities. Monuments is testimony to this.”
