Hammersmith Bridge To Close For Nine Days

Motorists are being given advance warning that traffic congestion is likely to be heavier in parts of south west and west London over the February half-term holiday after the announcement that Hammersmith Bridge is to be closed to all vehicle traffic for nine days.

Hammersmith & Fulham Council, in partnership with Transport for London, has announced the bridge will be closed for maintenance work from 7am on Saturday, February 11 to 5am on Monday, February 20.

During the works, drivers will be diverted instead over Putney and Chiswick Bridges, with traffic delays on the approaches to both expected to be significantly heavier for the duration.

The closure will also affect a number of bus routes. These are routes 33, 72, 209, 283, 419 and 485.

Bus route 72 will be diverted via Chiswick Bridge. Routes 33, 209, 419 & 485 will all terminate at Lonsdale Road, south of the bridge. Route 283 is already curtailed at the Hammersmith Gyratory since revised bus movement restrictions over the bridge were introduced six months ago.
Pedestrian access over the bridge will be maintained. Cyclists, however, will need to dismount and walk across or use the alternative routes via Chiswick or Putney Bridges.

February’s programme of works includes the replacement of old deck panels and resurfacing sections of the bridge. Additional major repair works are expected to start on the bridge in late 2018 and will involve a further closure that’s expected to last many months.
