Fancy Being a School Governor?

Information event at Ealing Town Hall

A special event's being held in Ealing in a bid to recruit more Governors.

People interested can find out more about the voluntary role and training available at the event onTuesday, 15 March 2016 5.15-7pm.

Governors support the head teacher and senior management and hold them to account. They don't get involved in the day-to-day running of the school but governors can make decisions about budgets and resources, ensuring money is well spent.

Governors do not need to have connections to a school unless they wish to become a parent governor, when they must have a child at the school.

The average time commitment for governors is around six to 10 days per year which will include two meetings per term, plus preparation. Full training is provided by Ealing Council.

Cabinet member for children and young people, Councillor Binda Rai said: “I am hugely appreciative of the hard work and commitment of more than 1,000 governors who provide vital support to the borough’s schools. We have governors from all walks of life who bring a range of skills and experience to the role but we are always looking for more people to come forward to enable governing bodies to have the required skill mix to make them even more efficient. Having been a school governor myself I know that it can be very challenging but hugely satisfying and I would invite people to come to our information event on 15 March.”

The chair of Hathaway Primary School’s governing board, Denise Maloney, has more than 20 years’ experience as a governor at a number of schools in Ealing. Denise has been a governor at Hathaway since 2014.

She said: “The rewards of being a governor are great. It’s hugely satisfying to feel that you have played a part in a child getting a good education – being able to read and write and having enjoyed their time at school.”

Jamilah Kanval became a parent governor at Hathaway, where her daughter is a pupil, in November 2015. She said: “Becoming a governor wasn’t something I entered into lightly but as an English teacher I was impressed with the school focusing on improving literacy and wanted to use my skills to make a positive contribution that would benefit all pupils. As a new governor, attending your first meeting can be quite daunting but there’s a lot of support and training from the governing board and Ealing Council.”
