Recycle Old TVs Safely Warns Council

Digital switchover approaches soon

With the digital switchover starting this week, Hounslow Council is reminding residents to recycle old TV’s if they are buying new equipment.

People across Hounslow with analogue TV’s will lose BBC 2 from 4 April, and the remaining channels on 18 April.

Analogue viewers need to convert their sets to receive digital signal, while Freeview viewers will need to retune their equipment.

People with satellite or cable TV will be unaffected.

It isn’t necessary to get new TV equipment for the switchover - almost any TV can be converted with a digital box.

But if people do buy new equipment, they need to make sure they dispose of their old TVs responsibly.

Old TVs can contain materials and chemicals that can harm the environment, including lead, dangerous phosphors and glass.

To prevent old TV’s being sent to landfill, you can recycle your old TV equipment at Space Waye reuse and recycling centre, or book a Tidy Town bulky waste collection. There is a charge for the Tidy Town service, so contact recycling@hounslow.gov.uk or 020 8583 5555 to find out more.
