Local detective sergeant receives highest Met honour

DS Tippett praised for his role in response to London bombings

Detective Sergeant Ian Tippett of Hounslow Police has received the highest honour in the Metropolitan Police Service - twice!

On 15 February, in the largest ever such ceremony in the history of the Met, Sir Ian Blair presented Ian with two Commissioner's Commendations.

The Commissioner was joined by Lord Triesman from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Mayor Ken Livingstone and MPA Chair Len Duvall.

DS Tippett won the awards for his help in the responses to the Tsunami and the London bombings on 7 July 2005. The officer is in charge of Hounslow’s anti-social behaviour unit but also is part of the Met’s specialist Disaster Victim Identification team.

Superintendent Simon Phipps said “We are all extremely proud of Ian and the work he does. It is difficult to imagine the horrors that he faced when helping to deal with these two disasters. These commendations recognise his actions in extraordinary circumstances and also the support his family gave him throughout”.

Commissioner's Commendations are awarded where members of the Service display a high degree of bravery above that which would normally be expected or where members of the Service perform their duty in an outstanding manner far above that which would normally be expected for their rank, role, responsibility training and/or experience.
