Hounslow Police will carry out a radical examination of its policies and procedures to ensure it offers the public a fair and equitable service.

The investigation, described as a “diversity healthcheck”, will be the first carried out by any police force in the United Kingdom and will lead to progressive improvements.

The project, called “Our Community Mosaic” will be officially launched on November 15th at Syon House. Speakers will include Sir Ian Blair, the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service.

A team of assessors, including Independent inspectors, will closely examine 20 key areas of police work to ensure all races and ethnic groups are treated equally and fairly and without discrimination.

The health check will also examine police staffing issues, including staff development and training and aims to ensure staff understand the policies and strategies they work too.

Following this first stage, consultation will take place with community partners and action taken to address areas of concern.

The idea is the brainchild of Hounslow’s borough commander, Chief Supt Dr Ali Dizaei. He said: “This is an ambitious and long-term process, which will enable us to see whether we are providing a fair and equitable service to our community.

“The process embodies our aspirations to win the confidence of our communities, improve our legitimacy and gain the trust of the public in our communal journey to create a borough which is safe for all to live in, work in and visit.”

Senior figures from the local community and representatives from the Metropolitan Police Authority and Commission for Racial Equality will attend the launch.
