Chiswick pays silent tribute to bomb victims

Office and shop workers join passers by in two minute silence

At the sound of Our Lady of Grace's bell tolling midday, Chiswick fell silent in remembrance of those who lost their lives in last Thursday's terrorist bombings.

Locals joined millions of people the world over in a two-minute silence held a week after the attacks took place in which 48 people are known to have been killed.

On the Chiswick High Road, car drivers slowed and others pulled over as shop and office workers left their tills and desks to stand side-by-side in silence.

This scene was echoed all over Chiswick as candles were lit and prayers said in churches of all denominations.

"It was so moving." said one shop worker "We all came outside the shops and stood in silence. Although I was rather upset that not all drivers felt they should stop to show their respects."

Mayor Ken Livingstone told the BBC the city's response "showed why the terrorists have no chance of success".
