Council's new site will list all community events for Olympics and Jubilee
With fewer than 100 days to go until the London 2012 Olympic Games, Hounslow Council is kicking off the borough’s summer of celebration with the launch of its new-look Facebook site.
As well as the new Hounslow Summer of Celebration Facebook page, the council is also releasing details of the three community events taking place along the Torch relay route on Tuesday, 24 July.
The pages at www.facebook.com/hounslowcouncil will be a one-stop shop for everything going on in the borough throughout the summer, including activities to mark the Diamond Jubilee, events in the run-up to the Games and Paralympics, and much more.
The council is encouraging residents to share information on what they are doing to mark what will be an unforgettable summer, from Jubilee street parties and the lighting of a Jubilee Beacon, to projects which will be part of the Olympic legacy in the borough.
London Borough of Hounslow Chief Executive Mary Harpley said: “There’s so much happening in Hounslow this summer, and our new-look facebook site will be the place to find out just what’s going on and how people can get involved.
“Apart from telling you what we’re doing to make this a summer to remember, it’s also a wonderful way for you to share what you’re doing with us.
“Whether you’re having a Jubilee street party or want to know the best place to watch the Torch relay as it passes through the borough, if you’re running a community event or taking part in Olympic activities, this is the place to shout about your celebration.
“There will also be details on how we’re planning to deliver business as usual over the coming months, particularly during the Games, when there will inevitably be changes to some services such as rubbish collection due to road closures.
“If you’re not already following Hounslow on Facebook, now’s the time to join in, find out more, and share in our summer of celebration.”
Brentford High Street
Commissioned by the council, the Brentford High Street Steering Group will be creating a carnival atmosphere as the Torch reaches Brentford at 11.40am, with an array of music, performers and activities centred around Market Place. These include walkabout entertainers, golden stilt-walking dragons, jugglers and living statues, face painters, dancing from the Alliance Dance Unit and stalls selling arts, crafts, food and drinks.
The highlight of the Brentford event will be a two hour programme of live music including jazz, pop and reggae, with the main stage surrounded by country-style hay bale seating.
Hounslow High Street
As the Torch enters Hounslow town centre at approximately 12.20pm, it will be greeted by Dhol drummers and a colourful array of entertainers including singers and dancers from the Multicultural Centre, with the activities centred around Holy Trinity Church.
Lampton Park
There will be a chance to see the Torch when it reaches Lampton Park at approximately 12.30pm, while being entertained by carnival dance groups presented by Feltham Arts or listening to the sounds of horn and percussion group Brassroots.
