Beavers Go Crazy At Rock's Lane

Scouts descend on Chiswick to participate in first District Crazy Golf Competition

Beaver Scouts from Brentford and Chiswick descended on the refurbished Rock’s Lane Sports Centre last Saturday afternoon to take part in their first District Beaver Crazy Golf Competition. Beaver Scouts – who are aged 6 to 8 are the youngest section of the Scout Association, a movement that celebrates its 100th Anniversary this year.

The event was only made possible following the recent refurbishment of the old ‘back tennis courts area’ adjacent to Turnham Green Tube Station. In addition to upgrading the tennis courts and adding football pitches, the new owners also installed a 9-hole crazy golf course.

Chiswick Beaver Scout Leader and CW4 regular Shaun Joynson recalls the previous facility. “I remember the old courts right back from when I first worked in Chiswick in the 1970’s. They were awful”.

One afternoon last autumn, Shaun was out shopping when he met a Beaver Parent who told him about the new facility. During that half term Shaun arranged a trip for his Beavers that was so successful, he decided to organise a district event.

That too was a great success. Thirty seven Beavers from the 3rd Chiswick and 6th Brentford competed to be the Crazy Golf Champions of local Scouting. The winner was 7 year old Ollie McDaid of the 3rd Chiswick, who carded the incredibly low score of 34 for the 9 hole course.

“It was a brilliantly sunny day and the Beavers had a ball, so I think we have a hit on our hands” said organiser Shaun. He also praised the Rocks Lane management for their help with the day and added. “Crazy Golf is an ideal activity for Beavers and I think this is going to become a much appreciated fixture in our annual activities calendar”.
