I suppose it comes as no surprise to learn that I’m often asked: ‘When should I consider replacing my boiler?” The short answer is: As seldom as possible. Main reason being: Cost.

But when talking about cost, a seesaw of economics comes into play, and you have to find that crucial balance in order to make the right choice.

To help you, I’ve put together my top-5 considerations when thinking about replacing your gas boiler.

It’s more than 10 – 15 years old

A well-maintained boiler can easily last up to 10 – 15 years. However, after this length of service, efficiency ultimately starts to decline. According to the Energy-related Products Directive (ErP), modern boilers boasting A-ratings for efficiency, means they utilise at least 90% of the energy they consume. Note: You won’t ever achieve 100% efficiency, even when the boiler is brand new.

Older boilers, often termed ‘G rated’, can waste a significant amount of energy, running at 70% efficiency equating to huge energy losses, and higher bills. Replacing your boiler with a new, energy-efficient model could save £1000s over the course of a year.

Most plumbers will be able to gauge the efficiency of your boiler and give you a relatively accurate percentage figure. We do this by assessing the boiler data plate and seeing how much kilowatt input of gas it consumes, versus how much kilowatt output in heat it produces. For example, if it gives 100kW of gas and it produces 70kW in heat, it will be running at 70% efficiency.

Too many repair and service call-outs

As your boiler ages, breakdowns will ultimately become more frequent. General wear and tear and the build-up of dirt internally, all contribute to having to carry out the odd service from time to time.

But if your boiler seems to require a fix every other month, it's a strong sign of trouble. Consider the cost of repairs compared to a boiler replacement. Sometimes, multiple repairs within a short period can outweigh the upfront cost of a new boiler, especially when factoring in the increase in efficiency and potential warranty coverage offered by a new one.

Many boiler manufacturers only provide a 2-year warranty, and think carefully before signing up to and extended one. Any repairs outside this period are certain to cost you money.

Brittle and failing components

Over time, the constant heating and cooling cycles take their toll on your boiler's internal components. Plastic parts, in particular, can become brittle and more susceptible to cracking or failure.

These failures can lead to leaks, pressure issues, and even complete boiler shutdown. Replacing a boiler before these components reach their critical point can prevent a potential disaster and keep your home warm and safe.

Inconsistent Heating and Hot Water

I cannot stress enough how important it is to ensure that your home is draft proof and, your double glazing is still up to the job. Afterall, there’s no point in having a super-efficient boiler if all that energy is literally flying out of the window.

So, if you’re finding that your thermostat is cranked-up, yet your home still feels unreasonably cold, you need to check that first. Likewise, before you panic about your hot water temperature, first check your boiler pressure before making any decisions.

If those things are all good, the issues could indicate a failing heat exchanger, a vital component responsible for transferring heat from the burner to your water supply. A malfunctioning heat exchanger can be expensive to repair, and in some cases, a boiler replacement might be the only viable solution.
