This autumn, the Tabard Theatre presents a new production Richard Harris’ acclaimed psychological thriller, The Business of Murder.
Two people – Dee, a successful but edgy television writer, and Hallett, a cynical CID detective, are separately given a plausible reason to visit the flat of the humourless and seemingly very ordinary Mr Stone.
But why are they really here? Who is he? Why has he tricked them here? What does he want from them? As the plot twists and turns his motive slowly becomes clear. They are all, it would seem, in the same business. The Business Of Murder.
The Business Of Murder was a massive hit in the West End when it first opened, running for eight years before being produced in theatres worldwide. The play comes from the creative mind of Chiswick-based, award-winning writer Richard Harris, whose other hit plays include Stepping Out and Outside Edge, and whose extensive crime writing credits include TV detective shows such as The Avengers, The Saint, The Sweeney and A Touch of Frost.
Richard will be joining the cast and creative team in the rehearsal room, offering his unique insight into the play and characters. The Business Of Murder is the fourth of his plays to appear at the Tabard, following Liza Liza Liza, Dog Ends and, most recently, The Last Laugh which received 5-star reviews and award nominations in 2022.
“Welcome to a thriller that achieves it all. . . . Sensational.” The Times
“The most ingenious murder mystery to have appeared on the London stage in a decade.” Daily Mail
“The best stage thriller for years, it is sharply written … and kept me guessing to the end” Sunday Mirror
Gary Webster plays the cynical CID detective ‘Hallett’. Gary is probably best known for playing Ray Daley opposite George Cole in ITV’s Minder series for 4 years. He has also had regular roles in EastEnders, The Bill, Hollyoaks and many theatre roles in the West End and regional theatre.
Charlotte Hunter plays the successful television playwright ‘Dee’. Charlotte trained at the Oxford School of Drama after her stunt work on the Harry Potter franchise. She has since performed on stages worldwide and appeared on screen in Emmerdale, Doctors, The Herd, Mrs. Davis, Dungeons & Dragons and many more.
And completing the trio is Miles Gallant who plays the seemingly very ordinary ‘Stone’. Miles’ theatre credits include An Inspector Calls, Macbeth, Romeo & Juliet, and A Christmas Carol (all touring), Mr Foote’s Other Leg (Theatre Royal, Haymarket), The Forger’s Tale (Criterion New Writing showcase).
Directed by Nick Bromley (The Last Laugh) and revised by Richard Harris for the Tabard production, this gripping psychological thriller plays a five week run from 23rd October.
