Chiswick’s local theatre has secured another string of award nominations, this time for its new production of fun-filled musical The Lady or The Tiger which kicked off the theatre’s spring season last week.
Alongside a Standing Ovation Award nomination from London Pub Theatres, announced earlier this week, the production has just received four nominations for the Offies (Off West End Awards) for Lead Performance in a Musical - Wayne Smith as The King, Musical Director - Philip Shute, Director (Musicals) - Keith Strachan, and Musical Production. The Offies awards are open to independent, alternative and fringe theatres and are hotly contested with over 100 venues being eligible. This is the sixth production at the Tabard to be nominated for the Offies since the theatre reopened in July 2022.
Described by Chiswick W4’s review as a ‘rip roaring fantasy musical drama’, The Lady or The Tiger follows the story of a tyrant king and his ongoing quest both to devise ever-more outlandish entertainments for his subjects and to punish the suitors who come seeking his daughter’s hand.
Audiences and critics alike are waltzing away from the theatre with spirits high and songs in their heads as they heap praise on this musical revival.
“a joyous production...It’s endlessly entertaining, and my first instinct on leaving the Tabard was to book tickets to see it all over again.” ★★★★ ½ Mark Aspen Reviews
“This was an extremely well-polished performance of the highest quality.” ★★★★ London Pub Theatres
“The Lady or The Tiger will keep you smiling, and it is nice to have a show that isn’t mired in doom or given excessive length, just absurd and silly.” ★★★ ½ Lou Reviews
“A show that lets you forget the world’s dilemmas. A show that is sprinkled with spoonfuls of vivacity and verve.” ChiswickW4
“a lively and thoroughly entertaining musical mini-extravaganza.” Chiswick Calendar
The Lady or The Tiger , is directed by award-winning director Keith Strachan, who brought us last year’s hit musical Next Door’s Baby. Catch it while you can – playing only until 23rd March.
Hot on its heels is a production which took the Edinburgh Fringe by storm last year, garnering 5-star reviews, sold out shows and awards for its two actors. Appraisal, by Tim Marriott, is the story of an annual work review that goes horribly wrong. A two-hander dark comedy, it’s a power play of manipulation, subtext and subterfuge, exploring the explosive consequences that can arise out of a seemingly innocent conversation. Appraisal plays at the Tabard from 26th March to 13th April.
‘Intelligent and incisive, utterly captivating’ ★★★★★ Stage Whispers
‘A battle of wits, tight, well paced and engrossing’ ★★★★★ Reviews Hub
‘A terrific play, disturbingly realistic’ ★★★★★ GlamAdelaide
‘A masterclass of gaslighting and a masterpiece of manipulation’ ★★★★ Everything Theatre
And alongside the main-house musicals and plays, the Tabard plays host to a variety of one-off events, including stand up comedy, music, cabaret and solo performances. After selling out his first show at the Tabard in April, DCI Colin Sutton has now been confirmed to bring his ‘The Real Manhunter LIVE’ back again on 26 th May and record-breaking Ray Bubbles brings his ‘Ultimate Bubble Show’ to the Tabard to delight audiences of all ages.
