London Woodfuels

Your local producer and distributor of sustainably produced fuel

London Woodfuels is a new company that has been set up to produce and distribute sustainable woodfuels to the local area. Our aim is to offer our customers a competitively priced, ethical and convenient way to provide for their firewood needs.

We offer deliveries to the whole of London but provide a unique delivery service to our local catchment area of West London.

We produce high quality kiln-dried firewood for use in open fires, stoves, boilers and wood burning ovens/ranges, as well as supplying kindling and firelighters.

Kiln-dried wood is dried to under 20% moisture content, whereas seasoned wood can only reach about 30% moisture content after being stacked and dried for 1-2 years. The extremely low moisture content of kiln-dried wood means that it burns much more efficiently and gives out more heat and less smoke.

Often, we have found available woodfuel to be of a poor quality, high moisture content and produced from inferior softwood conifer species. Softwood forestry plantations are not as beneficial to the environment as natural native woodland and are also relatively scarce in South-eastern England, meaning that this wood is often sourced from Northern Britain or sometimes even overseas, consequently with a large carbon footprint.

Our materials are sustainable and locally sourced and our products are locally delivered, which allows us to provide renewable woodfuel with a very low carbon footprint. We work closely with local authorities and companies to minimise the financial and environmental cost of disposing of trees that are removed through woodland management and arboricultural works, at the same time encouraging active management of woodland to increase biodiversity.

These are some of the other reasons that make woodfuel an appealing choice:

-With the high cost and dwindling reserves of gas and the associated inflation-busting cost increases projected over the next decade, many people are looking to alternative, cost-stable and renewable fuel sources to provide heat and hot water to their homes. On the horizon is also the controversial method of ‘Fracking’.

-The government are introducing the domestic Renewable Heat Incentive in Spring 2014, which will give people investing in certain renewable heating technologies a regular incentive payment, designed to help cover the cost of the technology and fuel. More information can be found on the Ofgem website.

-Woodfuels are renewable and it is only the small amount of energy that goes in to their processing and distribution that makes them carbon-lean rather than carbon-neutral. This makes the carbon footprint of our woodfuel around 30 times less than that of natural gas.

-Contrary to many people’s belief, burning wood in a smoke control area is permitted if it is done in an appliance that has been exempted for this purpose or if certain modifications have been made to the flue/chimney to reduce particulate emissions. A list of exempt appliances can be found on the DEFRA website. Burning wood outdoors is permitted provided it does not cause a danger or nuisance, refer to your local authority for more information.

-The look, scent and warmth of a wood fire provide a comfort and aesthetic value that you just can’t get out of a radiator!

We understand that space can be at a premium in London and that having a bulk order delivered is not always practical. This is why we have set up our unique regular delivery service, which allows customers in our West London catchment to buy our kiln-dried firewood in bulk at cheaper prices, but have the bags delivered in smaller quantities on a fortnightly basis.

The boroughs currently included in our catchment are: Ealing, Hounslow, Hammersmith & Fulham, Hillingdon, Harrow, Kensington & Chelsea, Brent, Barnet, Richmond and Wandsworth. The advantages of this service are:

-You can take advantage of our low bulk-purchase prices, starting as low as £4.47 per bag (a bag is typically 10-12kg of wood).

-You do not need to have a garage or outbuilding to store large amounts of firewood, nor do you need to expend a lot of effort shifting or restacking a large amount of firewood.

-You do not need to go out, load and transport wood, but rather have the amount you use delivered direct to your door.

-Your firewood will always be freshly kiln-dried. When dry wood is stored for long periods of time it will absorb moisture from the air essentially turning it from kiln-dried wood to seasoned wood.

-We aim to deliver to our customers between 5pm and 9pm when they are most likely to be at home.

We also deliver one-off bulk purchases to anywhere within the M25 (delivery conditions apply).
