The Golden Age of Travel with Goyard

Designer Handbags & Fashion at Chiswick Auctions

As the oldest leather goods manufacturer still in business, Goyard has been recognised for craftsmanship and quality since its inception. Founded in 1792 under the name Maison Martin, the company produced custom-made trunks for the French aristocracy and was granted the official pur veyor of H.R.H. – the indomitable – Duchess of Berry, for its efforts.

A half a century later, François Goyard joined the company as an apprentice before taking over the company in 1853. Goyard the brand was born and its headquarters are still located to this day on the prestigious Rue Saint- Honoré in Paris. With Louis Vuitton opening a year later, it was the name Goyard that became s ynonymous with luxury in the golden age of travel.

Admired by the likes of Coco Chanel and the Duke of Windsor, Goyard is also much-loved for its personalisation service. Its bespoke travel pieces command a hefty price tag and past commissions have included a trunk turned portable writer's desk made for Sherlock Holmes creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Amidst a cacophony of noise in today's fast-paced digital world, Goyard remains shrouded in mystery. The family-run brand does not engage with e-commerce, advertising, or endorsements and with strict production quantities, it can be both difficult and costly to acquire a St Louis Tote or piece of luggage in the renowned chevron Goyardine pattern.
