Carrie Reichardt wins Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship
Local radical artist Carrie Reichardt was the surprise winner of the Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship winning the award to ‘advance the craft of community mosaics in the UK’.
Carrie trained at Kingston University and achieved a First class degree in Fine Art from Leeds Metropolitan. She was Artist in Residence at Camberwell Art College in 2009. Following a period as Artist in Residence at The Single Homeless Project, she remains a proactive supporter, donating a percentage of the profits from some of her ‘Mad in England’ series to the charity. Her work has appeared in leading galleries around the world and she represented the UK as part of a group of international artists invited to mosaic the Argentinian Government building in Buenos Aires.
Carrie is best known for her anarchic crockery, where vintage floral, kitsch, royal and religious crockery is given a new twist by re-firing with layers of new ceramic decals. They are modified in a "radical use of traditional things", along with skulls, cheeky slogans and political statements. The Churchill fellowship will fund Carrie to visit and work with Isidora Paz Lopez in Santiago , Chile. Lopez is responsible for creating the largest mosaic installation in South America with over a team of 60 artists. She will then be funded to travel to Mexico , where she will visit Oscar Perez in Miravalle to learn how recycled plastic is now being incorporated to make stunning community mosaics.
Carrie was delighted to win, saying that she “hoped that winning this award would give her the valuable knowledge and skills needed to start large scale mosaics in her own local community”
Carrie recently became a committee member of Acton Arts Forum and will be part of the upcoming festival ‘Art Hits the Streets’.
South Acton estate will host a Public Art Momentum during the week ends 12-14th and 27-28th April with famous and local artists including Carrie Reichardt, Mark Sinckler, Teddy Baden, Cosmo, Mark Wydler and Zabou. They will all be working live and showing how they paint or mosaic the walls.
