Roehampton Street Parade Includes Over 100 Participants

Roehampton hosted a large-scale community arts event this weekend as part of Wandsworth’s programme for the Mayor of London’s Borough of Culture 2025. The event, titled Urban Flow, featured a street parade involving local performers, dance groups, and musicians, alongside the unveiling of a new public mural at Roehampton Library on Saturday 13 September.
The parade was the result of a collaboration between three arts organisations: India’s Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts, UK-based charity Kinetika, and Wandsworth’s Tavaziva Dance. Participants included groups from across the borough such as Pointe Black, Ibstock Place Primary and Secondary School, Base Youth Group, Roehampton University, the Wandsworth & Roehampton Street Band, and Tai Chi Chuan practitioners.

The procession, which included over 100 local participants each with a flag, moved through Roehampton’s streets, pausing at heritage sites for dance and martial arts performances. It concluded with a finale on Bull Green. Performers carried hand-painted silk flags created in both India and the UK, and the event was accompanied by an original six-part musical composition by Rob Blake. The score followed a narrative arc representing stages of human development, from childhood through to transformation and triumph.
In addition to the parade, the weekend saw the installation of The Four Seasons, a new mural at Roehampton Library. Designed by artist Adalberto Lonardi and curated by Emergency Exit Arts, the artwork was co-created with local residents and reflects seasonal changes and community-led improvements in the Alton area. The mural forms part of the council’s Alton Renewal Plan.

Local MP Fleur Anderson, Deputy Mayor for Culture Justine Simons and Wandsworth Councillor Kemi Akinola both attended the event and acknowledged its role in fostering community participation and cultural expression.
Urban Flow is one of several events planned under Wandsworth’s designation as London Borough of Culture, a year-long programme supported by the Mayor of London to promote creativity and inclusion across the capital.
