Three storey building to be added at rear of site on Upper Richmond Road
The Lodge Hotel Putney
The Lodge Hotel in Putney has made a new planning application to Wandsworth Council to expand on its existing site.
The four star hotel seeks consent for the demolition of a later wing at the back of the site 52-54 Upper Richmond Road SW15, the erection of a new three storey building in its place and refurbishment, alterations and added height to two other central
sections of the existing hotel (White Block & Stable).
The changes would add 19 rooms to the hotel up from the existing 73.
This long established, privately owned hotel was founded by the current owner’s grandparents in 1971. At the time it was the only hotel in the Putney / Wandsworth area and it remains in the same family ownership now run by Mr Ben Hirschfeld. The Hirschfeld’s are long-standing employers in the local area and are also residents
The original buildings were two detached Victorian villas, now with a connecting block built in the eighties between them containing the main entrance and reception.
The application states that subsequent piecemeal extensions behind these buildings have resulted in a series of linked but disparate and visually unattractive blocks with convoluted circulation.
The business currently employs around 35 full time staff, and it is anticipated the proposed changes would provide employment for 4-8 extra shifts per day.
The proposed works consist of:
• Demolition of the other 1996 cottage to be rebuilt to on three floors reflect the 2016 block on the other side of the dining room.
• Further rooms in the same style to be added above the single storey dining room providing a consistent appearance from the rear.
• Renovation of the hotel’s other central building (White Block) to allow for more rational circulation and the provision for the first time of a lift to improve facilities for all, creating step free access to most bedrooms and much increased room availability for less able guests.
Some of the neighbour of the hotel are objecting to the plans saying it is already too big for the site and the level of noise is unacceptable. It is also claimed that the new buildings will block out light to neighbouring flats and communal gardens.
The planning case reference is 2020/2888 which you can use to find details of the application and make comments on Wandsworth’s planning portal.
