Funding from NUS to make University an "edible" campus
A project at the University of Roehampton has been awarded £230,000 in funding by the NUS Students Green Fund. “Growhampton” is a collaboration between the Roehampton Students Union and the University’s Environment Team, which will see the University becoming an “edible” campus and transformed into a model for sustainable food.
The focal point for the project will be the Growhampton Hub - a café, food co-op and social centre selling locally-grown produce. The Hub will host a range of workshops and events, including a farmers’ market and allotment training. Each of the University’s colleges will boast a community garden, which will be open to the local public. Student volunteers will support Growhampton outreach work and the project will offer volunteering opportunities for local young people seeking work experience.
RSU President Wade Tomlinson commented on the bid's success:
"This is a really exciting opportunity for students at Roehampton to lead on the sustainability agenda, and be at the forefront of the kinds of changes we need to make in society".
The University of Roehampton’s Vice-Chancellor, Paul O’Prey added:
“We are committed to making Roehampton a green University, and I am delighted that the team behind Growhampton was successful in their bid. This project offers lots of opportunities for our students and the local community to get involved and work together.”
