Omicron becoming dominant strain in the area
Government has increased availability of booster jabs
The current case rate for Covid-19 in the SW15 postcode area is believed to be the highest since the beginning of the pandemic.
Some neighbourhoods have seen a doubling of cases in the most recent week for which data is available on top of strong rises previously as the Omicron strain of the virus becomes more prevalent.
The infection rate in parts of Putney and Roehampton has risen about 1,000 per 100,000 in the week to 12 December which means that during those seven days 1% of the population has tested positive. The worst affected areas at the moment are Putney Town & Wandsworth Park and Roehampton North West.
On the other hand the Putney West area has the lowest level of infection and saw cases fall in the last week.
A Putney based GP told us, “I’m not convinced this is the peak of infections as Omicron is only really getting started but any doubts that it is highly transmissible are now gone. If asked what I am saying at the moment is that if you catch it now you will be isolating on Christmas Day so take a lot of extra care and don’t have contact with more people than you need to.
“The indications are at this stage that its symptoms are generally milder than the Delta variant immediately after you contract it but it has made people severely ill and at least one (unvaccinated) person has died.
“The message remains the same as before – if you have are offered a vaccine or a booster, take it.”
Wandsworth is currently the borough with the fourth highest infection rate in London at 809 cases in a week per 100,000 population. This compares to Lambeth, the borough with the highest rate, at 836.
