The programme of giving Covid-19 vaccines to the residents of Putney has begun in earnest.

Staffed by trained personnel and a significant number of volunteers the centre at the scout hut on Oxford Road was up and running this Thursday (7 January).

According to reports from people at the centre the huge task of administering the jabs is running smoothly.

The local centre is operated by the West Wandsworth and Wandsworth Prime PCNs which cover most of Putney and Roehampton and will supplement the facility at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Roehampton which may go live for vaccinations at a later stage.

There is also a centre in Southfields and, according to the latest information a vaccine centre will open soon in Roehampton. The first centre to open in Wandsworth Borough was in Roehampton.

Fleur Anderson MP said, ‘It has been a sign of hope to hear of many older people and care home staff getting their vaccines. Like everyone else, I just want this now to continue as fast as possible.

‘Everyone will hear from the GP by letter or phone call. The Prime Minister must deliver on his promised vaccination programme promises so that lives can be saved, and devastating isolation can end for these priority groups, businesses can reopen and we can get back to normal life. I will be following this progress closely.’

The first tranche of vaccines were offered to some over eighty-year olds in December and this is continuing throughout January. The Government’s commitment is to vaccine the top four priority groups by mid-February Prime Minister’s commitment to offer vaccines to all in the top four priority groups by mid-February. These are: care home residents and staff, frontline health and social care workers, all those aged 70 aged and over and clinically extremely vulnerable individuals.

Fleur Anderson is also calling for better communications. She said, ‘Many people have been in touch with me to ask when they or their elderly relatives will receive a vaccine locally and are desperately waiting for news. I have met with Ministers and local health officials to ask when vaccinations are expected to take place locally and to call for increased local capacity for delivering vaccines. I have been told by Wandsworth clinical commissioners that the majority of over 80s will have been contacted and offered the vaccine by the end of January.’

The first people to receive the vaccine were booked in for a second vaccine in within weeks, but this has now been delayed in order to provide more people with the second vaccine. The Secretary of State has said that the second dose will be of the same vaccine type as the first.
