A motorcyclist has been killed after they were hit by a car in Roehampton that was being chased by police in the early hours of this Monday (29 January).

The police say that a patrol attempted to stop a Range Rover close to the junction of the A3 and Roehampton Lane at around 12:25am.

The driver failed to stop and a pursuit was authorised but shortly afterwards the car collided with a motorbike.

The pursuing officers stopped to offer first aid to the motorcyclist and paramedics also came to assist but the rider was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the victim has not yet been established.

The driver of the car was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop for police, causing death by dangerous driving, theft of motor vehicle and driving under the influence of drugs and remains in custody.

The Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed and a referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct which has opened an independent investigation.

Any witnesses yet to speak with police or anyone with dashcam footage is asked to contact the Met via 101, ref 110/29jan.
