Born in Chiswick?  Seb Coe?  Phil Collins, others?

Just seen a vague entry on Wikipedia to suggest that Seb Coe was born in Chiswick/ West London.   Is this so?Details of Phil Collin's life in Chiswick is easily gleaned from FORUM SEARCH.But Seb Coe from Chiswick..that's new..can anyone confirm that!Anyone else born locally amongst the posters? ;0)

My great grand parents; grand parent and my mother were all born in Chiswick - my grandmother was transferred to west mid due to health complications but their birth certificates say Brentford and Chiswick - and if I my memory serves me my grandfathers says Middlesex - they were home births registered at the Parish. Whatever that means?

They are in London Metropolitan Archives under H36/CM but you need to go thru a procedure to prove who you are as the records are only open to the indivuals concerned They are closed to others for 100 years

I think that you can add actor Hugh Grant, and the twins Carol and Mark Thatcher to the list of births at Queen Charlotte's.

It seems that Seb Coe was actually born in Queen Charlottes, Hammersmith (across the road from Chiswick W4) and not at the Chiswick Maternity Hospital.We've mentioned Frank Field MP on the Forum before  and it seems he was born in Chiswick, went to Hogarth School (we have a School photo on Flickr) and then went on to St Clement Dan's Grammar School in Ducane Road.

I have lived my entire 62 years in the same house in Chiswick.  I was born in Queen Charlottes but my older sister in Chiswick Maternity hospital.  I know lots  of people who move away say they always miss Chiswick, but that's probably true of anyone moving away from their childhood stomping ground.

Seb Coe certainly was a Chiswick boy.He did most of his training at the Polytechnic sports ground in Hartington road and was good friends with my father in law who was a groundsman there.I was also born in Chiswick and have lived here all my life.The first 25 years, to the south of the A4, and the last 30 to the north.

Thank you Mr Lawes for taking photo of the old maternity hospital We believe my wife was born here in June 1944  Her parents at the time lived in Shepperton but the V1's were dropping at the time and the babies covered over in case of flying glass  This only is the decent photo I have seen  Thank you for putting it on flixer

Also in Oxford Road North at No 4 or 6 lived my mate from School. Allan Love and his Dad was often playing the bagpipes.You might both have relations who remember that strange bellowing!.Also, at No 18, according to my little book, an Alfred Emerson and a Mrs Luxford lived after the year 1937 mentioned...on different floors I presume.Does anyone remember Mr and Mrs Cory who lived on the corner with Chiswick High Road (east side).Mr Cory was once a Councillor and a good friend of my Dad. The Pilot Pub was around in those days too...since 1869 according to Gillian Cleggs book.

I believe the main entrance to the Hospital was via Netheravon Road South.This picture, which I took in 2005, is from the Chiswick Mall side.

I was born in  Chiswick Maternity hospital and was always under the impression it was in Chiswick Mall. My brother Dermot was also born there, I believe the other 7 siblings where born at west mid or in the Stratford area.Venessa your husband must know my family, as we have lived at number 18 Oxford road north since 1937. I however was not born till 1959.

I remember John Entwhistle playing the french horn in a borough youth orchestra when he attended what was Acton County school, I was in the choir. I saw some photos of him on Friends Re-united from those days. His first wife lived just along from my Mum and Dad.

I read on a site that I found through Wikipedia a while ago that the Station Hotel in Harrow (where the Who played several times) had been demolished to make way for four blocks of flats. The story was that the blocks were named, Townshend , Daltrey, Entwistle and Moon. I have no idea if it's true but it would be nice if it was.

I used to live in Ravenscroft Road, near Chiswick Park Station, (going back 15 years), and several times saw Roger Daltrey getting out of a very expensive Mercedes sports car in our street. A neighbour told me his mother lived a few doors down from us. A shame because I always liked the Rolling Stones more than the Who

Whilst doing some internet research on Nazareth House, Isleworth a few years ago I came across a note that said that Pete was born there, and not Chiswick. (I could not find the source on the internet today). I was hoping one of the planned new housing blocks would be named after him but the scheme came to nothing.....

There used to be a maternity hospital on Chiswick Mall - I was born there, as were my brother and sister. My mum was born in a nursing home on Oxford Road and her brother was born in a nursing home on Barrowgate Road.

I heard Pete Townshend still has houses in Devonshire Road.He studied at Ealing Art College and an old artist friend of mine,Denis Bowen,used to teach him in the 60`s.I worked a lot with Denis Bowen before he died a few years ago.When he was teaching he used to put Jimmy Hendrix music on loud,drop acid and throw paint from a balcony onto canvasses below.He was a radical teacher-and good fun-he told me Pete Townshend was a good student.I grew up in Acton and the Bush and used to see the Who around before they got famous.Great talents-all of them.Roger Daltrey used to train at the Hogarth club and i used to see him in the gym.He always kept in good shape.I thought he was a talented actor as well as singer.His accent is pure West London.Both he and Townshend have great business acumen and are sharp.I still go to their gigs.They have survived 40+ years of Rock and Roll.That is no mean feat!

Do you know I'm not sure.  My daughter made off with my box of old photos etc containing my birth certificate and I can't remember which number fome reason I think it was either 13 or 17 but I could well be wrong.  I'll have to ask her.

Unless they are born at home, I doubt that many people who live, and always have lived in Chiswick, were actually born there. The overwhelming majority of W4 births take place in either Hammersmith or Ealing.

There was a maternity hospital somewhere just south of the A4 near Fulers brewery, I think it was there util about 1960.I was due to be born at home in Fauconberg Road,but due to complications entered the world in Queen Charlottes. As for Roger Daltry, he was from South Acton W4 and is still seen occasionally in the area.

Thanks for that Richard..about Seb Coe.If ever I catch up with him, I'll ask him the question!So, in the past, a lot of local mothers living in Chiswick would have had their babies delivered at Queen Charlottes, Hammersmith..and have the birth registered as Hammersmith!Those mothers, you suggest, who had their babies delivered at Chiswick Maternity Hospital in Netheravon Road South came with the Ealing Registration District.Some Chiswick locals used to have thir babies delivered at Perivale Hospital ..no longerer there.Must check my Birth Certificate..I'm sure it says Chiswick W4 ..having be born at home.

I too was born in Queen Charlottes but grew up and still live in Chiswick. I also believe that Pete Townsend and Roger Daltry grew up here too (my mother used to go to bingo with Mrs Townsend)Not sure if they were born here though.

I was born in Queen Charlottes 40 odd years ago so my regitration was in ?Hammersmith but I grew up in Chiswick never having actually lived in Hammersmith, the same goes for all our children.

"Just seen a vague entry on Wikipedia to suggest that Seb Coe was born in Chiswick/ West London.  Is this so?"It's also stated on www.made-in-sheffield.com  ("Although he was born in Chiswick, London (on September 29 1956), Coe grew up in Sheffield and considers it his home."), and on several other sites.However, the birth of a Sebastian N. Coe was registered shortly after that date in Hammersmith registration district, whereas at that time Chiswick was in Ealing registration district.  Maybe he lived in Chiswick after being born at Queen Charlotte's?
