Brexit Party - Farage

Seeing Farage on Question Time last Thursday, and then on the Andrew Marr show on Sunday, I hope that his true colours are now clear for all to see. What struck me on Question Time was how he consistently shouted down the female guests or rolled his eyes saying "oh my god" when they were speaking.  But noticeably, he didn't try the same with the male guests. He is just an old fashioned, common or garden misogynist (perhaps not so surprising). He also showed on Question Time  that he was ignorant or outright deceitful about the WTO. And his inability / refusal to answer straightforward questions on the Andrew Marr show - and his readiness to lie, without any apparent embarrassment or shame when called out.Farage was insisting that if we pull out of the EU without a deal, the EU will come running, desperate begging us to do a deal. We have heard that before.  Does anyone really fall for that? What we now know is:1 Farage is in favour of privatising the NHS;2 He doesn't like hearing people speaking foreign languages;3 He admires Putin;4 He is in favour of weakening gun control in the UK.I saw a Brexit Party campaign stand on Saturday, so thought I would have a chat about WTO rules, and how they thought that "WTO Rules" (or "WTO terms" or "WTO basis") would work for us in practice.  Apparently I was lucky in coming across the party's "expert".When politely questioning his "facts" I was met initially with evasiveness, and then with outright hostility. He insisted that the UK could negotiate free trade deals in a matter of weeks (!); he discounted the fact that 80% of UK trade is with countries (inside the EU and outside the EU) with which we benefit either from free trade within the EU, or from EU trade agreements with the rest of the World (and deliberately or otherwise sought to confuse a "free trade" agreement with bilateral trade agreements generally); was not willing to address the fact that 80% of the UK economy is in services, not goods, or explain how he thought that would work under WTO rules; insisted that the UK could just adopt the EU WTO tariff schedules, without any other country's approval (which is wrong, and in any event then begs the question what the point of leaving the EU is at all); denied that any other countries had objected to the UK's proposed tariff schedules (despite the fact that 20 counties have reputedly done so — including, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, Russia and the US).In short - the Brexit party is trying to take us for a ride.  Why?  Perhaps if we knew who is funding them we would have a better idea. And anyone who thinks that the UK will be able to negotiate better WTO terms on its own then as part of the EU is living in cloud cuckoo land.  The US in particular will insist that their "health" companies must be allowed into the UK to take over NHS services (before we start on chlorinated chicken, hormone pumped beef,  etc. etc.). So if and when you meet a Brexit canvasser I suggest that you ask them about the above points.

Hounslow makes 'Rotten Boroughs' - again!

'Since 2019 Gillian Steward has been chair of the Lampton Group, the London borough of Hounslow's 'arms length' conglomerate, which runs a plethora of services on the council's behalf. Curiously, her tow-year stint at Hounslow has been scrubbed from her LinkedIn profile, although the mastersin public administration she never completed is still there. She arrived in Hounslow after a brief stint as interim chief exec. for the London Brough of Kingston. She had left as CEO of the L.B. Bexley in 2018 after a "change in her personal circumstances". She left behind a reputation for divisiveness and took with her a payoff of £94,000.Under Steward, the Lampton Group at Hounslow went through a major and chaotic restructuring as more and more services were brought under its umbrella. Steward assured everyone that "residents, mebers and staff will be front and centre of any decisions...making a positive difference to people's lives".Sections were rebranded. Hounslow's housing and maintenance division, which had become "Lampton Facilties Management 360", became Coalo (from the Latin for nurturing, not the fossil fuel). Staff got new t-shirts and resprayed vans, along with pronunciation advice. When Steward joined the board of Coalo on 1 January 2021, four non-executve directors resigned. One felt "behaviours have crossed the boundaries of inappropriateness  and unprofessionalism" and complained of bullying. A recruitment drive for replacement directors promoted an organisation with a "warm and supportive culture. A company Group that has the feel of a Family Firm" - which was news to several departing directors. Now, with this massive restructuring still to bed in properly, Steward is off to help Cumbria with its "journey of transformation". Lucky Lakeland'

‘Redesigned’ CS9 views

I had a look at the designs for the proposed “temporary” CS9.  Let’s be realistic, if it goes in it will not come out.I’m not sure why it is described as temporary and not the fully implemented CS9?  I guess funding or legal reasons? It does look a lot better than the temporary solution.  I can see it encouraging younger riders, families and people just riding for pleasure. But, I would also guess it will not appeal to the “serious” riders, commuters etc.  The people that want to get from a to b in the quickest time. What that means for traffic, who knows?  Will there be more accidents, as you will probably have cyclists on CS9 and both main lanes? As CS9 becomes more popular I also think this will force more riders onto the main lanes. But I think the right group has been prioritised. If I’m waiting to cross the cycle lane with my children the “casual” riders are always careful, they stop at crossings, they ensure their kids are riding carefully. What I would add for the first couple of years at least is regular attendance by PCSOs that can stop and fine cyclists for breaking the law.It wouldn’t take long to change the habits of the few jumping lights, riding off the road onto pavements to avoid lights, not stopping at zebra crossings etc. if fines were being dished out.It would also help with the acceptance of this change if everyone has to stick to the rules. Finally I would suggest a law change that allowed children under a certain age to legally scoot/ride on the pavement.I still don’t think CS9 is suitable for younger children.Comments on a postcard 😊
