Well, I'm as ill-informed as anyone else, but if (big If) my memory serves me adequately the plan was for M&S to build a new store at the opposite end of the site to where they are now. Upon completion the old store would be vacated, M&S would switch operations to the new building and the major redevelopment would begin. I also have a feeling that the site has more than one owner. Probably all rubbish, but never mind.
