You must surely have been aware of the more derogatory use of "ponce". It's long been used for gays. See what Google's AI has to say on the subject (David Lesniak take note, as well):"Ponce (and its adjective form, poncey or poncy) has a clear homophobic connotation in British English, often used as an offensive, derogatory term for a gay man or a man perceived to be effeminate. "Here is a breakdown of the usage and meanings:Homophobic Slur: It is frequently used to insult men based on stereotypes regarding their sexuality, dress, or behavior, implying they are not sufficiently masculine.Other Meanings: Historically and commonly, it also means a pimp (a man who controls prostitutes).General Derogatory Use: Beyond its homophobic usage, it is also used to describe a man who is overly pretentious, vain, or fussy."Context: While some may use it to describe mere affectation or vanity, the word carries a high risk of being perceived as homophobic and is often considered a taboo word in polite conversation. " The word has roots in 20th-century British slang and Polari (a form of slang used by some gay men)."
