John Dale's suspension and Meta

A few days ago I was reading in Private Eye about how the looser moderation policy at Meta has resulted in a dramatic increase in anti-semitic comments and a corresponding increase in attacks culminating in the murder of the young couple who worked at the Israeli embassy in Washington.I am not accusing Meta of being anti-semitic as I'm sure their new regime has resulted in a rise in hate speech against a wide range of communities.The banning of John Dale's site could therefore be some sort of target driven operation which means that they still have to suspend some accounts to give the appearance of doing something but without a human actually looking at what they are blocking.His page is the only thing I look at on Facebook these days but I am familiar enough with the platform to know it was exceptionally well run compared to man other groups which are totally lawless. My only criticism of him would be why is he effectively giving his time and effort for free to such a terrible company.

This is one reason I deleted Twitter/X last summer (despite having a lot of followers) though the main one was that he had said that the UK was having a civil war (over the Southport murders).I moved to Bluesky ‪@cllrguylambert.bsky.social on the basis this was formed by ex-Twitter people and pledged not to go down the Musk route. It has taken me nearly a year to accumulate 15% of the followers I had collected on Twitter but I am so far perfectly happy posting there.I detest Facebook for all sorts of reasons, but mainly because it is in my experiance a pain to post there if you're doing something like a blog. I moved my blog (which is anyway every week on BrentfordTW8.com) to my new website guylambert.blog As far as I can tell my website host is not one of the guilty!

Meta may have been called out on this one but they have been working against news media for along time and this process has really intensified since Trump got elected. If you still use social media you'll have noticed links to professional news sources are slowly being de-emphasised and more talk of 'fake news' and 'mainstream media'.In place there is a huge amount of disinformation which is now increasingly going unchallenged. Social media is full of conspiracy theories nearly all of which are nonsense but the one that has the most credibility is the one that gets most vigorously denied. You can be sceptical of the view that technofascists like Elon Musk and Peter Thiel are deliberately trying to create news deserts and boost the proportion of the population that is information-lite which makes them easier to manipulate through the channels they control. However, if you choose not to believe this is happening then you are accepting that trends that are massively boosting the power of this very small group of people are happening by accident.
