Chiswick on Lidl's target list

I know these lists published by supermarket chains are speculative and don't usually indicate a live plan but Lidl is once again highlighting Chiswick as an area that they would like to come here. See the Metro article below:https://metro.co.uk/2025/04/29/lidl-reveals-500-000-000-uk-expansion-plan-supermarkets-unexpected-places-22991468/I think there is a real danger that if Chiswick does have a good spread of retailers including discounters, it might struggle even more. I was really hopeful Lidl would have taken the unit now occupied by Wren Kitchens by Empire House.Everyone seems to be aware now that Poundland isn't going to be around for long with M&S having acquired its lease and, for me at least, that was a big draw to the High Road.

Two nearest Lidls for us in Acton. One by A40 junction has more ‘lines’ of products than one in Churchfield Road in central Acton.

I sincerely hope that Lidl comes to CHR. It will save driving to Twickenham.

It’s great news that Lidl has perhaps targeted Chiswick as a location.This is certainly not lowering the tone since we do unfortunately imho suffer from an overdose of coffee shops which all blend together.We have the most affluent AB social group while the lowest income groups (DE) being essentially absent and £5.00 latte becomes the norm.

It hasn't been officially confirmed that they now have the lease for the Poundland unit but I've heard that this is the case both from staff and people involved in commercial property in Chiswick. Even if they have that doesn't mean that the will be closing the shop any time soon. As pointed out earlier they sat on the Putney High Street lease for seven years and kept the unit vacant.They could just be locking in the leases to ensure that they  can control which shops are positioned next to them. Maybe they don't like the fact that they have a Poundland next door although I would have thought it brings more customers to them than it discourages.They would need the freehold or the agreement of the freeholder to knock through to the units either side. As far as I am aware, they don't own the freehold of either building.

I thought marks were extending into the 2 empty properties the opposite side of Poundland? Where the sports shop was and mini velvets previous location? I never realised they were taking over Poundlands premises. That's one of the only shops that I do enjoy going to lol

Mark, some of us like bijou shops. Like you I switched to shopping in Acton when we were cut off from Chiswick by the closure of Fishers Lane and the resulting traffic queues to get to Sainsbury's. So now the necessities are bought in Acton generally by driving to get them and shopping for pleasure is done in Chiswick generally by walking there.

The closure of the Fishers Lane underpass made us reconsider our weekly shopping choice and we started going up to Acton instead because it became quicker to get to. The more times I visit the more I become aware of the better range, value and choice it provides other than for bijou shopping opportunities. If Fishers Lane reopened, I probably wouldn't switch back to Chiswick but if it had a Lidl maybe I would.

Thank you both for explaining something to me that others might have spotted was implicit in my original post. The point I was trying to make is that, without any discount offerings, Chiswick could see reduced footfall. Even fairly wealthy people seem to be making the effort to cut household expenses these days and, if Chiswick only has premium retailers, some will choose to shop elsewhere.

It is probably a list generated by a simple calculation of average distance to nearest store by population density. Acton (x2), Ealing, Shepherd's Bush and soon Brentford all have Lidl's so W4 is an obvious gap. However, Michael is probably right that there is no potential units available that would be big enough for them. WH Smith might have worked if it could have been expanded but with Greggs taking the unit next door that is no longer an option.On M&S one thing to bear in mind is that they can tend to move slowly. They closed their Putney store in 2018 but hung onto the lease and only recently decided to reopen. The expansion plans might seem exciting but if there is a further economic downturn, the units next door might remain vacant for a long time. Hopefully they will allow Poundland to continue to trade but it looks like their property team prefers vacant possession so they can start work when they want to pull the trigger on expansion.

+ it is worth mentioning that Lidl have listed 76 potential locations in NW London alone so Chiswick is just one of 76 and it is more difficult to come up with a location that they haven't mentioned...

I thought retailers like Lidl want premises of a certain minimum size and the vast majority if not all properties fronting CHR simply don't have the square footage they are looking for.Hence M&S on CHR knocking through to adjacent properties to increase their square footage.

'Poundland' should not be allowed to trade under that name as so many things they sell now are certainly not a pound ! I remember when even the Chiswick branch did the 3 items for a £1 - I didnt realise how spoilt we were at the time ! Kept me going in chocolate very cheaply for a long time : )Lidl would be fine with me. I love our variety on the High Road, we re lucky to have options as many town centres just look the same now, no individuality.
