Prisons in England and Wales are almost full. The prison population has been higher than the "uncrowded capacity" since the 1990s. The government has released prisoners early, delayed court hearings, and used police cells as overflow capacity. The backlog in courts handling the most serious crimes in England and Wales has reached an unprecedented high and is likely to rise further still. Some 73,000 trials were unheard at the end of September 2024, around twice the figure in 2019. The system is broken. I didn't wear my skean dhu for Burns night!
