Income tax was retained because is relatively straight forward to collect from wage slaves, cheap for the government to collect, generally speaking easy to understand/explain and at least superficially fair - those with the broadest shoulders pay most. The real reason is to pay the interest on the national debt incurred to pay for all those wars.In addition in the 20th century the State began providing more and more services that we as electors consider essential; universal health care, basic social care, pensions, transfer payments to over half the population (i.e. benefits) an effective nuclear armed defence force, a corruption free justice system, a reliable policing service, roads and extensive transport subsidies the list goes on and on.
