Michael, The routes are worked out beforehand (after it's known what packages are expected to be on the delivery van). It's likely to be similar to what happens in Amazon warehouses where the pickers get told what to pick next and where to go. The goal is to minimise the time taken to pick all the items. I've watched on a delivery app while waiting for a parcel to arrive, the location of the delivery van and the numbered drop off points. The computer doesn't care about the time, but it can give an estimate when, if every drop off goes to plan and if the traffic is at typical levels, the package is likely to arrive.
