Recycling part used candles !

Who would have thought that such a facility exists!Recycling fanatics will be pleased to hear that the reception area at Chiswick Library has a collecting box for candle remnants in place.Well "strike a light"!

Thanks Anne.  I do still have some candles and matches always ready for electricity outages as there are always storms.  In fact recently there was an enormous clap of thunder overhead in the middle of the night that woke me with a fright.  I prefer the LED night lights in the hall and and a solar powered light I bought from a charity that are always ready to use.  People in Scotland had a much worse time with telephone lines down, electricity lines  down and no mobile signal.  Planned changes to landlines may mean we can't phone 999.  So be prepared this winter.

We never threw away the soap ends.  They were either added to the new bar or I remember when we were little sitting round the kitchen table and putting a whole lot of them through a mincer and then wetting and moulding them into multi-coloured bars.You can now buy pouches of lkquid soap refill in some supermarkets so you don't need to buy so many recyclable plastic bottles with their unrecyclable pumps.  Is there a refill shop in Chiswick now where you can refill a big bottle to then refill your own ceramic bottles to put on your wash hand basin?

My parents collected the tail end of soap bars in a large jar to compress them into "new" bars.No doubt a practice left over from the war years.

The use for the candle 'ends', if I remember what I read some months back, is to make more candles.

In the early 1970s... the Cornish Wafer biscuit company decided to run a "sales promotion" that offered an elegant oil lamp (with a globe) for about £8 together with a coupon cut off from the biscuit packet.The Biscuit company ordered 5000 lamps (from Heath's in Birmingham) thinking that would be sufficient.In the event the "3 day week"calamity occurred with the Electicity workers' strike. The country suffered gloom!The Sales Promotion exploded with over 50,000 orders. The Ealing handling company couldn't cope with the deluge of cheques,postal orders and queries.Heaths couldn't produce more oil lamps quickly ... it was all a big headache for my Employer.However, candles and Oil Lamps became very popular at that time.Be prepared for the next black-out!

Anne. Shops that sell more than a certain amount of batteries have by law to provide a collection point.  However these are not always obvious to shoppers.  I remember several years ago asking a shop which had an awful lot on sale and they were using a drawer behind the till.  They have moved on now.With candles - I just wonder what the further use of them is?  Is someone making candles or are they being used for art or some other use?  There is more than one sort of wax.  Just interested.  I very rarely use them as candles nowadays as I consider them too dangerous for us and LED nightlights and torches are very good and cheap to use.  I have used them as decoration and have probably got some very wonky ones I could usefully donate somewhere.  A cousin used to have candlelit baths which I've always envied the idea of but never indulged in!

I noticed one of these collection points in Brentford Library two to three months ago - not sure whether it is still there. I see that one can also drop off used batteries at Brentford Library, probably also at Chiswick Library.

Drawer runners do need encouraging, I also find. Soap also does the job.

I've always used these for rubbing on the underside of chest of drawers drawers to encourage them to run well.
