drivers who break the speed limit or go through amber lights

Is it in any way acceptable for them to do so? Should they be prosecuted?

If traffic light are positioned in direct sun it's difficult as can appear green is on, I reported a set like it and they replaced them with a longer funnel to the front to prevent the sun shining directly on them if you see lights with that problem please report it.

Believe it or not, I hadn’t read the link that Steve posted.The link clearly wasn’t about what this thread started off being about, and in Steve’s view when I change the subject when responding to one of his posts, that’s a reason to berate me. On the other hand, if a thread ‘morphs’ that seems to be ok. Not really sure why I’m berated while it’s fine for others to change the direction of the thread.Anyway, as to the link, now I’ve read it,  the perpetrator has got off remarkably lightly considering the severity of the injuries he caused to the two victims. Being honest I’d have rather had him spend some time in jail, if there was some way of ensuring that the person he was caring for could be looked after.

Note that Andrew has run a mile from commenting on the Court’s extremely lenient sentencing of the cyclist mowing down, and seriously injuring innocent pedestrians.

Keep up Andrew old fella. The contributions morphed into the issues about prosecutions of irresponsible cyclists. I didn’t change the thread. Admittedly I changed the subject header to warn people that the content had veered away from motorists because I thought it was the polite thing to do so that anyone who can’t stomach the facts about cyclist prosecutions doesn’t have to read the post.

People who break the speed limit are breaking the law and are frequently prosecuted, particularly since the increase in cameras. If I speed and get a ticket then that is my fault and I would accept that. It isn't always an offence to go through an amber light. It depends on the circumstances. In some circumstances they should be prosecuted. If they jump a red light then they should be prosecuted.

Obviously not every driver passing an amber stop signal does so in a reckless fashion, but I’d argue that some of those who do so, whilst accelerating without good reason are reckless.And no, accelerating to ensure you pass the signal while it’s still at amber rather then turned red isn’t a good reason.

'So many morons, who, despite having a hands-free unit, still pick their phones up to send texts or answer calls.'If you are in a traffic queue or the car in front doesn't move when the traffic does or the lights change - bet your bottom dollar they are faffing around with their 'phones, you can see them, heads down and away with the fairies.As for going through amber lights - half of them seemingly don't know what a red light means either!

It us a little better. The MPS issued over 4000 fixed penalty notices and the City of London police almost 1000 fixed penalty notices last year to those wonderful 'law abiding' cyclists 🤣 for failing to obey traffic signals or riding on the pavement.

Drivers who break speed limits are frequently prosecuted - in 2023 c.250,000 drivers ended up in court and probably around 1.5m speeding fines were issued.As for going through amber lights, if you have time to stop safely you should stop, otherwise you may be fined and get 3 points on your licence.

If you habitually put your foot down to try to get through the lights you should consider yourself a problem!  You are taking risks with other people's lives as well as your your own and your passengers.

Qay odf the mark there. So many morons, who, despite having a hands-free unit, still pick their phones up to send texts or answer calls. Simple solution, £1000 fine and six points second offence means the loss of a license for a fixed period. It would be self financing if the police ever bothered to enforce it

From the Highway Code -"AMBER means ‘Stop’ at the stop line. You may go on only if the AMBER appears after you have crossed the stop line or are so close to it that to pull up might cause an accident."The latter can be a matter of opinion.
