Cycleway 9 Brentford Completion video

For those of you on X here is a nice video from the Council to celebrate the official opening of the new stretch of Cycleway 9 from Watermans Park to Alexandra Road in Brentford.

Ah yes but now we have a Labour Government so austerity has set in. Little hope of a Labour Council now employing 26 enforcement officers to tackle cycling fiends. Central government has cracked the whip and  the done by, whinging, Cllr Dunne would vehemently oppose a crackdown on her cycling buddies.

I was present at a public meeting at the George IV pub on Chiswick High Rd when 'Will'Norman, London's Cycling Tsar, promised that C9 when built would be patrolled by 26 (a very precise number!) enforcement officers who would ensure that cyclists stuck to the rules. Perhaps we will have to wait until C9 reaches Heathrow. Personally I would be grateful to see even one Cycle Enforcement Officer active on Chiswick High Road and King Street.

The Council should have enforcement officers prosecuting cyclists using the pavements and fining abusers for swearing. The Labour Council in Broadstairs has done it.

Yes, I never realised cyclists never had to use the cycle lane, madnessor what, at least the children do use it, but the walkways have become the cycle lanes.

The cycle lane is of course to be welcomed. But if Chiswick is anything to go by it won't stop the menace of entitled t*ssers cycling on the pavement. When you suggest they might use the multi million pound cycle lane a couple of metres away you get a mouthful of abuse. I got shouted at the other day for not giving a cyclist 'enough room' on the pavement. Nobody seems interested in stopping this menace, which is illegal and dangerous, particularly for the elderly and vulnerable.

As I have observed before I was personally knocked off by a Transit van near the Musical Museum some time ago (no serious injury) but a paramedic I know who worked at W Middlesex was knocked off twice when commuting to Chiswick. She was hospitalised on one occasion.I also saw a young woman annoying young men by getting away from the old Kew Bridge junction faster than them. Their response was to drive gently into the back of her bike, laughing. She didn't fall but when I caught her up a few yards on she was in tears. There's already a sizeable increase in numbers cycling there, nearly all using the bike lanes.My friend who is late 70's and has dodgy knees can't deal with the hill within Watermans Park

The latest stretch of Cycleway 9 has opened linking Watermans Park with Alexandra Road. We went to the opening to see the positive reactions to the new route.

I've cycled it a couple of times already and, this stretch was never particularly difficult before, I can see why it could be intimidating for some in its narrow sections. Usage doesn't seem to have taken off much but the more people become aware what a great place Brentford is becoming to visit, the more will use it.
