A Chiswick High Road challenge ... back in the 1950s !

Some older folk may remember an engaging activity on Chiswick High Roadmany years ago now.Individual shops placed a "foreign object" in their front window display (say a shoe in a chemist's shop window)and we trawled up and down the High Roadseeking the answers to the quiz.There was much interest and Communityengagement ... and it must have been good for sales.Just a thought for tough retail times

This is a brilliantly conceived imitative and I have already seen families in the centre of town taking part. It'll be interesting to see how the parking warden strike affects trade but it could be the best Christmas trading for many years for local shops.

It's tremendous to see such community spirit in Chiswick over the Christmas period. I popped into Chiswick Lighting in Devonshire Rd to get my scavenger form for the kids and was amazed by the prizes on offer. I'm sure the kids will be delighted with whatever they win but I rather fancy the Sam's Brunch for Two or the Nordmann Christmas Tree that's on offer. Fingers crossed. The Chiswick Scavenger Hunt is on this year, which is similar to the scheme you refer to Jim. I saw numerous children dragging their parents up and down Devonshire Road looking for clues on Saturday. Entry forms can be obtained from Chiswick Lighting on Devonshire Road. I was referred to in the piece on the Christmas Lights switch on. All good fun and lots of lovely prizes.

Look out in June and September for The Bedford Park Festival and Chiswick Book Festival treasure hunts based on book covers with the support of shops in Turnham Green Terrace.

An interesting idea.  I also love it when there is a literary theme eg spotting a children's book character - especially apt when it is a character created locally and/or it is some kind of anniversary eg the connection in Putney between Elmer's birthday or just Mr Benn's adventures and the author who lived in Putney.  Those books and TV films have lasted so long that both children and many many adults recognise and love them!
