Ulez

Well it must be great for cyclists and walkers but both my children who have old cars and who live far out of London can no longer visit me - They have older cars  which still  work very well - and there is no way they can afford new electric cars - Thanks mayor -

Self-employed drivers will be able to claim tax relief on the daily Ultra Low Emission Zone (Ulez) charge.Workers with non-compliant vehicles can claim if their journey was "exclusively for the purposes of the trade".Ulez was expanded to include all of London's boroughs on Tuesday."This is a shot in the arm for sole traders, whose businesses will be hit by the Ulez charge from today," said Craig Beaumont of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).Those who are self-employed are able to claim tax relief on their travel expenses, including low emission zone charges, through their self assessment tax return.

People who live outside the zone but work in the new extension area will have to take public transport to work. As for tradespeople who need a van for their work, how many tradespeople do you know who are driving round in 8-year-old vans? In any case, the ULEZ charge is but a tiny fraction of what most tradesmen earn per hour. Another 10 minutes of chargeable work per day will cover it.

No it is wrong for a small minority of people to be driving 18+ year old petrol cars or 8 year old + diesel cars from areas of lower air pollution into London to poison Londoners living in higher pollution areas with the most toxic vehicles.

I think the extension is wrong. Think about people who live outside the zone but work within the new extension area but not in the existing zone. There are much better ways to move forward than taking a sledge hammer to crack a nut. Educating people about the various schemes available to encourage take up. Don’t forget it wasn’t that long ago when everyone was encouraged to buy diesel. I never did.

I'm disappointed in you Jayne, I thought you would be supporting the Tory-beloved strivers who rise to the challenge and work harder to get their new electric cars and vans. After all, when did you last see a tradesmen in an old van round here? But you're supporting the Daily Mail hated skivers who don't get on in life and pretend to their mum that they can't visit any more even though they've already been paying the ULEZ daily charge for 2 years to visit her and don't actually need an electric car to avoid it.

Tradesmen will pass the cost to customers, well my builder will be if he hasto work in London, so we will all be paying indirectly.  Some people are swapping cars with other family members with compliant car who live outside London.

There is a scheme for tradespeople to adapt any non compliant vehicles so they meet ULEZ standards with up to £6k on offer to retrofit a van, more for a minibus. They can get £9.5k to switch to an electric van. It’s well established that vehicle pollution shortens peoples lives and has reduced the lung size of young people.  Every time there is a spike in pollution there is a consequential spike in respiratory illness/visits to A&E. It’s pretty easy  and not expensive for most people to adapt or change their vehicle to meet ULEZ standards. Help is available for people on low incomes. But people would rather complain and deny the evidence that their selfish behaviour is damaging  other peoples health.

It’s isn’t about be poor people it’s a fact that trades need vans to do their work. The transport network isn’t great to get from one place to another across the zone. Plus people travel and use their cars for loads of reasons. It’s a con nothing to do with air quality just another chip in the wall of democracy and a very nasty way to raise more tax. You should be so judgemental about the reasons people use their transport. Given all the selfish railway workers striking what are people supposed to do? Walk, cycle for hundreds of miles with their kit, young children, elderly parents etc. grow up Philippa and be a wee bit more considerate to your fellow citizens.

If more patrons of this forum were like Paul, dealing in fact and with a measured take on reality, rather than shouting into the void about whatever GB News have told them is wrong, then it would be a much more enjoyable place. Clearly this is an ill thought through scheme which will be the end of SK, Labour at its best. Keir has no strength of character to pull back SK on such an unfair, unpopular that has nothing to do with air pollution. Just look at the congestion all the schemes he has introduced are causing around London. Think about trades that need to go about their business just means costs will rise to cover this tax. Many people done have the funds to replace their non compliant vehicles whether business or private. The aftermath of covid, all the money people received has to be paid back, which includes public transport, WFH has hammered funds so all the ULEZ is another tax.

The other thing we are all missing here is that Chiswick has been inside the ULEZ zone for TWO YEARS! So anybody driving a non-compliant very old car into Chiswick will have been paying the £12.50 for TWO YEARS!

Mark Harper, Minister for Transport could have delayed the implementation of this hated ULEZ Cash Cow by invoking through the European Banking Authority (still relevant post-Brexit) Article 143, paragraph 3.This action would have stretched the delay through to the next mayoral election. If a conservative candidate were to promise in their manifesto to scrap this cursed Expansion the prize would doubtless be theirs.A trick missed.

My 18 year old Ford Focus zetec 1.6 is ULEZ exempt. A great ‘drivers’ car. You can pick up a low mileage one of these for about £1200 to £1500. I was reading the Paris metro is being extended by 120 miles together with 68 new stations. Also a lot cheaper than ours. Interestingly it is run by the RATP who ran buses here. We should use the money raised from ULEZ to improve our transport.

Most petrol cars post 2005 and diesel cars post Sep 2015 are compliant with ULEZ. Sounds like your children are making up excuses not to visit their Mum if they are telling you that they need to buy a new electric car to do so.

Helen, presumably your children could visit you using public transport - either from their homes or from a station outside the ULEZ boundary. I guess they would have to compare the ULEZ cost plus their fuel costs to the rail ticket prices.

What happened to Frequent Flyer Tax?  The big problem is some people think they are far too important to travel any other way.  Others have reduced their air travel and take public transport more.We have pretty good public transport in London and we should be calling for even better so that all our stations are more accessible.
