Jon, there are many pathetic pedants, trolls and old farts who have spent all hours of every day for years, desperately trawling through every thread on this forum, so that they can give us the benefit of their wit and wisdom. So slow software is an absolute boon to them.I can think of one "clever" and unpleasant old git who, if he's on his usual form, will be along any second!

As far as forums go, re the software, it is dreadful. Having to click to see each individual reply is tedious. Just look at any other modern forum, you can see everything in once place just by scrolling with a quick reply feature on the same page.This thing is so outdated it is unreal.

Thank you Jayne! He grabbed a piece of drain pipe from the front garden which led into a soakaway and chewed that up! Inside he is confined to the kitchen (which is not small) and hall at the moment as he has not quite mastered toilet training (quarry tiled floors) - he is very good about it except when it rains - he absolutely refuses to walk in the rain, the little devil. Cardboard seems to be his main choice and anything he can get out of the recycling bag which we have removed to the downstairs shower room but he sometimes sneaks in and grabs something. We have a load of 'stuff' which the grandchildren play with in the sittingroom which we will have to store out of his reach once we trust him not to water the carpets. He is a very good boy really - my youngest son, who lives with his wife across the road, came walkies with us this morning - Frankie (the puppy) was so excited it was like taking a jack-in-the-box for a walk. Must be a good 18 years since we had a dog! We have had him 3 weeks tomorrow.. he has learned sit, stay, wait, drop and NO! He is 14 weeks old now, he had 2 weeks with a family who could not cope with him as they said his teeth were too sharp (sigh) and was returned. They had never had a puppy before. We took him on and soon taught him not to nibble on human hands. xx

Delilah you can buy a spray to stop the puppy chewing on items, just spray it everywhere the puppy likes to chew. If you have wooden feet on sofa, chairs legs etc. my husband cut down drain pipe and placed it over the wooden legs it works. They do stop chewing then remove them ha! good luck puppies are hard work but worth the reward as they get older. The cats will get used to the dog and hopefully peace will be restored.

The idea of people inventing problems in order to have something to become annoyed about rather amused me. I'm wondering now what I can be annoyed about - other than American spelling - but then that's something REAL (in my mind, at least!).

Quite agree Jim - life was good back in the days of trying the patience of Richard J on how to post pictures and some lengthy forum 'discussions' etc. etc.I always (well on the odd occasions I do pop on here) read the lost cats posts out of curiosity (and care) but certainly the old days have gone and most of the fun too.Our house has gone to the dogs anyway - we adopted a rescue puppy 3 weeks ago, madness at our age. Our 3 cats lie in wait to attack him, everything that is chewable is being chewed and we had to ban him from the back garden as he ate what our ducks produce in vast quantity and no, not the eggs sigh!The good part is I now get up at 5.45 to walk him round the fields at the back of us - not easy as they are ploughed and  usually full of muddy puddles with deep holes but the early mornings are so peaceful, even in this peaceful place!

There's also a tendancy for people to be offended on behalf of other people which doesn't help. Oh, and a lot of people invent problems simply to have something to become annoyed about.

I do think this forum is generating a lot less interest than in the past and this trend is likely to continue.  But compared to ActonW3 this is still a hive of activity.  For example, right now Acton apparently has 57 people viewing the site while this one has 1497.  But a couple of years back it was common to see figures of well over 5000 for this forum.  I haven’t noticed anything like that recently.  I think there are lots of reasons for this but I suspect that a main one is that it doesn’t have much appeal for younger folk and there are far more appealing types of social media out there than was the case when this all started in the early noughties.I’m not sure that posters are any more ‘ratty’ than in the past - there’s always been blazing rows about one thing or another but I think society as a whole is much more polarised than it was and we see that reflected here.  I dare say Covid and lockdown have been factors.

Since Covid people can be a bit ratty and think we have had far too many changes too quickly and people find it difficult to adapt or adjust to it.

Sometimes.The mere mention of fully reopening of Hammersmith Bridge,any negative reference to the Cycle Super Highway or Lime Bikes and you wait. A cacophony of howling yapping and barking pooches will instantly be  unleashed to nip at the ankles of the original poster.Other times it just ends up in a good old fashioned cat fight!
