Agree about Cheryl — there must be two of her because I see her around all the time. It's a nonsence that there is no police presence on the High Road any more and council funded McCops are not the answer. A relative of my wife's is quite a senior detective and I remember speaking to him a few years ago about the shoplifting issue on Chiswick High Road. Even back then there was a problem and I don't think, apart from a recent blip, it has got any worse or better despite what you might read in the papers. I trotted out what I believed then was the solution, more bobbies on the High Road, locking thieves up. He said that even if you can persuade a court to give a custodial sentence the offender (assuming they are an addict) will reoffend on release. Unless we provide adequate drug rehabilitation services, which there is no plan to do, we have to accept that there will be a level of crime from people needing to steal to service their addiction. As for bobbies on the beat, he said it was pointless. If  drug user sees a police presence they go somewhere else to steal — it is ultimately a zero sum game. He said that the root of the problem is the supply chain that fuel these thefts. Drug addicts are directed to steal particular high value smaller items such as razors, booze and things like Beatrix Potter hardback books. All of these retain their value after being stolen and end up with dodgy wholesalers and shops through a middle man. To tackle shoplifting you need to identify this part of the network and wipe it out which requires lots of intelligence man hours not officers walking around the street with no specific purpose.
