A long standing problem. Time to abolish most of the benefits (e.g. pension credit) and increase the basic state pension. Those with private pensions will pay some additional tax.Time to look again at abolishing the personal element of NI deductions and integrating it with the basic rate of Income Tax. Some pensioners would pay more tax but they would also receive a larger state pension. The employer element of NI should be re-launched as the payroll tax which is what it essentially is. This would simplify the administration of NI (and benefits) and free up people to do something useful.

You are right about the poorly named Attendance Allowance. Many people think that you are only entitled to it if you have someone looking after you - that is not the case. Age Uk (or Age Concern in Chiswick) will help with any application which is backdated to the day the claim is made. There are two rates depending on need (around £65 or £101) per week. It is not means tested and can make a significant difference to supporting older people living in their own homes.

We found Attendance Allowance useful for taxis and train fares to hospital appointments etc. It didn't have to be used just for paying for care at home.
Many more pensioners fail to claim their Attendance allowance

Oh, yes. They'll have to be quick in order to get the cost-of-living payment but if they're eligible then it's worth applying at any time.

Where are you getting 'just over a week to claim' from? If you're eligible then you can claim at any time.
